What this calculator does
It tells you whether zakat is due on the gold you own and how much to pay, item by item. You list each piece by weight and the carat stamped on it. The calculator finds the pure gold in every piece, adds it up, compares it with the gold nisab and gives the zakat in grams of gold and, if you enter a price, in pounds.
It is built for gold bought and kept in the UK:
- UK hallmarks. British gold is marked 375, 585, 750, 916 or 999 rather than in carats. Pick the number on your piece and the calculator uses the purity the Hallmarking Act 1973 gives that carat.
- Grams, tola or troy ounces. Family gold is often weighed in tola, bullion in troy ounces. Enter whichever you have.
- No price needed to know if you owe. When gold is your only asset, the test is weight, not money. You can find out whether zakat is due, and how many grams to give, before you look up a price.
- Your school's view on worn jewellery. Tick the pieces you wear and choose whether to count them.
How zakat on gold is calculated
Four steps, done for every item and then totalled.
1. Find the pure gold
A carat is a share of 24. Under the Hallmarking Act, 9 carat means 375 parts of gold per thousand, 14 carat 585, 18 carat 750 and 22 carat 916.6. Other carats follow the same proportion, so 21 carat is 875 and 24 carat is pure.
pure gold (g) = weight (g) × parts per thousand ÷ 1000Stones, enamel and the other metals in an alloy carry no zakat as gold, so only this pure figure counts.
2. Compare it with the gold nisab
The National Zakat Foundation (NZF) puts the gold nisab at 87.48 grams of gold, and notes 85 grams as another opinion. The first is 7.5 tola; the second is 20 mithqal. Weigh your total to the hundredth of a gram and check it against the figure your scholar uses. NZF says that if gold is your only asset, the gold nisab is the one to use.
3. Count or leave out worn jewellery
Scholars differ here. The Hanafi school makes zakat due on all gold, worn or locked away. The other three schools exempt jewellery you wear in normal amounts as adornment. A widely followed middle view adds two conditions: the pieces are actually worn, and they are not excessive for someone in your circle. Gold bars, coins and pieces kept as savings are zakatable on every view.
4. Take 2.5% of all of it
Once you reach the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of the whole amount, not just the part above the threshold. You can give it as gold, or its value in money.
zakat in gold (g) = pure gold counted × 2.5% zakat in pounds = pure gold counted × price of a gram of pure gold × 2.5%Zakat is owed once the gold has been held for a lunar year at or above the nisab. Use the weight you hold on your zakat date.
Which price to use
Online spot prices are what traders pay each other. NZF points out that a high street dealer would pay you around 10% less, sometimes up to 30% less, and sets its daily UK figure near what you could really get. Enter the price per gram, ounce or tola of 24 carat gold that you think is fair. The calculator converts a troy ounce at 31.1034768 grams, the legal UK figure.
Worked example
Fatima, in Birmingham, owns four pieces she keeps in a drawer and does not wear:
| Piece | Weight | Hallmark | Pure gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bracelet | 23.4 g | 750 (18 ct) | 17.55 g |
| Chains | 150 g | 375 (9 ct) | 56.25 g |
| Bangle | 12 g | 916 (22 ct) | 11 g |
| Coin | 1 g | 999 (24 ct) | 1 g |
| Total | 186.4 g | 85.8 g |
The chains are the heaviest pieces but, at 9 carat, hold the least gold for their weight. Her 186.4 grams of jewellery contain 85.8 grams of pure gold.
- On the 85 g nisab, 85.8 g clears it. Zakat is 2.5% of 85.8 g, which is 2.145 g of gold. At £90.83 a gram (NZF's figure on 14 October 2026), her gold is worth £7,793.21 and the zakat is £194.83.
- On the 87.48 g nisab, 85.8 g falls 1.68 g short, so nothing is due on her gold alone.
Without the 1 g coin she would hold 84.8 g and owe nothing on either reading. Close to the line, the reading you follow decides the answer, which is why the calculator lets you choose.
When you need more than this
- If you also have cash, savings, shares or business stock, NZF says to use the silver nisab for the total, which is much lower. Use our zakat calculator for all your wealth instead.
- Silver, gold-plated items and gold held through a fund or app are not covered here.
- If you cannot weigh a piece without its stones, estimate the gold weight; a jeweller can tell you more.
